Intensive language modules

This 12-tier program is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and provides small group instruction for students at all levels of proficiency, from true beginners to heritage speakers.
The approach is interactive, with emphasis on developing comprehension and production skills. However, each course also involves a strong writing component and appropriate reading exercises. Each level of instruction entails 60 hours of class time over a one-month period.

Semester-long language acquisition course

These courses are for students who wish to combine language study with other university level coursework. This option offers six levels of study, based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students receive 4 hours per week of language instruction over a 12-week period. Emphasis is on development of all four language skills.

  • Mexican-American Literature
    Spanish Level: Intermediate This course offers an overview of the most important genres of Mexican-American literature from the mid-19th century to the present. Short stories, novels, poetry, theatre and essays will be studied to understand the sociocultural reality of the Mexican American population of the U.S. and appreciate the aesthetic value of this community’s literary production.   • Spanish History and Culture through Film
    Spanish Level: High Intermediate to advanced The medium of film is an excellent way to begin to learn about the history and culture of Spain. While it is true that this genre, based on scripts and images, tends to over-simplify historical events, there is no doubt that it provides an excellent starting point for further discussion of historical themes. Thus, the films viewed in class will be complemented by classroom lectures and readings that contextualize and delve more deeply into historical periods, personages, and events. Code: ALI-ELEC 4300
  • Masterpieces of Spanish Literature
    Spanish Level: Intermediate This course takes a blended approach to the study of Spanish Peninsular literature, combining literary analysis with cultural and historical contextualization and language development. Using a commentary of text approach, which requires students to participate actively in the examination of each piece of literature studied, the atemporal and universal elements of the human condition found in great pieces of literature are brought to light and made relevant to today’s realities.   • An Introduction to Translating and Interpreting as a Profession
    Spanish Level: High Intermediate to advanced level of spoken and written In this course students will learn the strategies and techniques involved in translating texts from Spanish to English and interpreting in venues such as schools, hospitals, police stations and courts. Code: ALI-ELEC 4400
  • Special Topics for Independent of Small Group Study
    This course is designed to allow individual students or small groups of students to pursue an area of specific interest to them under the guidance of a qualified professor. These courses are developed in conjunction with the student and entail both independent work and regular consultation with the professors. Note: Subject to approval by home university advisors, who determine transfer credit. English or Spanish. Code: ALI-ELEC 4500
  • Contemporary Spanish Society
    Spanish Level: Bilingual and Progressive Spanish Approach This course offers structured information on contemporary Spanish society since the transition to democracy. Topics include the physical and geo-political divisions of Spain, the transition from dictatorship to democracy and the on-going evolution of Spain as a constitutional monarchy, the educational system, the workplace, the family, leisure activities and popular culture, art and festivals, as well as Spain’s place on the world stage. It is also a forum class for discussion and debate for students as they interact with the people and institutions of Spain. (Taught using a bilingual and progressive Spanish approach).   • Intercultural communication in professional contexts
    This course addresses the challenges and resources needed to communicate professionally in an intercultural context. With the workplace and the labor market becoming an increasingly global experience, communication skills and their development demand intercultural awareness and intercultural strategies. This course focuses on class discussion, student reflections and practical cases rather than lectures. Topics and contents will arise from weekly readings and assignments, as well as from audiovisual materials. The final Project includes a paper and an oral presentation in class.
  • Spanish cultures from an intercultural perspective
    This course seeks to develop intercultural awareness through the study of Spain as a society today. An examination of what intercultural awareness is precedes a more in-depth study of the geography and demographics of Spain, the politics of Spain, the evolution of Spanish society, and the economy.
  • Entrepreneurship Experience in the European Union: A Strategic Approach
    The main objective of this course is to examine entrepreneurial roles, motivations and activities through the study of strategies, concepts and techniques that are used by managers to plan, implement and conduct business. A comparative look at European and Spanish approaches in contrast to other models is included. Topics include I+D+I, researching sources for business ideas through market analysis, planning and implementing problem-solving strategies, presenting business plans to different audiences, and final planning and implementation of a business plan.
  • Human Resources Management
    This course is designed for business majors and minors to analyze international challenges involved in managing people. Issues examined include diversity, globalization, rapid business changes, organizational skills, increasing productivity, compensation and pay practices, motivational practices, employee separations and many others, providing an extensive overview of the field of HRM from a European perspective.
  • The Economy of the European Union
    The subject is designed for students who wish to learn about the European Union as a major force in world economics today. After an examination of EU institutions and the origins of the European integration process, the focus will be on monetary policy and economic structure, through an analysis of the differences in European Member States economies as well as the EU as a whole. Additional content includes the EU Constitution, fiscal matters, security and military issues in the EU, and stability and growth.
  • International Marketing
    On completion of this course students will have acquired a global overview of international marketing and will be able to recognize and formulate international marketing strategies. Topics include strategies for entry into the international market, marketing across cultures, creating a competitive advantage, patents, design and trademark protection, intellectual property as a marketing tool, managing brands through branding, among others.
  • Español de los negocios (Business Spanish)
    Spanish Level: Intermediate The goal of this course is to allow students to develop competency in an area that is not often covered in language acquisition courses. Students will become familiar with the terminology of economics, business administration, markets and other related topics in order to learn how to communicate correctly in these fields in Spanish. The development of writing skills for business purposes is emphasized including business letters, resumés and CVs, cover letters, job postings, invoices, and delivery and dispatch notes.
  • Género, lengua y poder (Gender, language and power)
    Spanish Level: Intermediate or advanced This course describes and analyzes the ways language and its uses create, reinforce or question power relations and identities related to gender. The main goal of this course is to analyze gender roles and discuss the media’s representation of issues related to gender and the way these representations manifest in language and sociocultural patterns. Students will acquire strategies to improve their critical thinking skills, reflect on the construction of gender in today’s media, and discern the power relationships created resulting from elements of language usage and media messages.
  • Enseñanza de español como L2/LE (Teaching Spanish as a Second or Foreign Language)
    Spanish Level: Intermediate For Spanish majors and minors, or anyone who might consider teaching Spanish in the future, this course will introduce methods and materials for teaching Spanish as a second or foreign language, as well as activities and resources. Students will learn the fundamentals of teaching and how to analyze or adapt materials for use in a Spanish language classroom. Cultural components and how to effectively incorporate them into a language acquisition curriculum will also be explored.
  • Turismo y cultura gastronomica española (Tourism and Gastronomy in Spain)
    Spanish Level: Intermediate In this course, theory and practice are combined to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to work in the tourism sector. Students will study issues related to sustainability, diversity and quality in tourism markets and will gain the language tools they need to interact with clients and colleagues. Spanish gastronomy will serve as a gateway to other topics of interest such as cultural and popular festivals, lodging and accommodations, transportation, new tourism trends, and Spain and Latin America as destinations.
